Im having intermittent starting issues with my vehicle and Ive gone over all sorts of possible causes from dodgy ignition barrel coil, key transponder, chafed wires, ECU damp, BSI problems and Im still not sure whats at the root of my sudden occassional non starting. Get the codes read, write them down, clear them and post on here.

To unlock it you will have to apply a spray, like the WD40 for example and spray the interior of the barrel, let it operate for a couple of minutes before attempting to unlock your steering wheel once again. Take note that if it works you will have to think about buying and changing the barrel of your car because eventually it will happen again

The other thing I found, is there can be an audible warning when your key battery is getting low, it is supposed to post a message on the info screen in the dash or instruments to say " Key battery low" or something similar. Oil level is good and reading OK on the dash when I turn key in ignition.
These are well known for this problem. It's due to the key and lock barrels wearing out. The spare key may work better if you have one but the locks will need replacing eventually. A new set including ignition and fuel cap are about £100 from online dealers. Chris U August 2007
